Chapter 13
Daria
Such a foolish man. I don’t have time for foolish, preposterous men. My eyes travel down to my phone. No missed calls. No texts. But of course, not. I blocked him. He figured it out last time and called from another phone, but I’m sure he’s come to his senses and left well enough alone. We had our moment. That’s all it was. A moment.
“Isn’t that right, Miss Alice? You were here. You remember. I’m sorry you had to see Auntie Daria’s naughty side, but boobs really shouldn’t be a big deal to a baby.”
“Oh wait, you weren’t breastfed. Am I minimizing your trauma?”
I cringe.
“Sorry, sweetheart. According to my books, you’ll forget whatever you see at this age. But if you don’t and your Daddy marries my sister, making me your real-life aunt, then I’ll make it up to you. I promise.”
She raises a fist in the air, demonstrating camaraderie. This girl gets me.
“I know. I’m terrible. Simply terrible. Your uncle is a handsome man. I’m a woman. He’s even better looking than your Daddy, but I hardly expect you to agree with me. You’re loyal. I respect that. Don’t worry, pussycat. These urges will not define me. No, ma’am.”
Placing her on my hip, I walk her into Mira’s kitchen to get us a snack. She looks peckish and I was so nervous I might run into Jakob on the way here, I forgot to grab dinner. While I peel a banana and pour some Cheerios for my partner in crime, I see Bruno rush to the door. He doesn’t bark. He whimpers. It’s someone he knows. Maybe, Mira’s back early.
I swear this pup can hear her coming up the elevator.
There’s a light tap on the door. Three quiet knocks are followed by a familiar voice.
“I just want to talk to you.”
Sweet Jesus, it’s Jakob.
I stare through the peephole. He’s not in a suit. This is the first time I’ve ever seen him out of a suit. Just a sweater. What is that? A mock turtleneck? He looks good. Too good.
Damn him. Damn him straight to hell.
“This isn’t a good time, Jakob.” I stare down at Alice, her eyes wide with suspense.
“Please, Daria.” His deep voice vibrates through the door, sending a shiver down my spine. I’m weak. Horny and weak.
“What do I do?” I whisper to Alice. She points to the door.
I frown and shake my head. She points again.
“Are you serious?” I lean my forehead into hers and she giggles. “Of course, you’re on his side. He’s your flesh and blood.” As I reach for the doorknob, she claps.
“That’s enough. If he breaks my heart, I’m blaming you.”
One quick check in the mirror and I unlock the door. The chain stays in place.
“What do you want?” I gaze out, licking my lips when his scent wafts over.
“Let me in. You know I won’t hurt you. You’ve got my niece with you. Please, Daria.” He begs.
When he hears Alice’s squeal, he addresses her. “Hey doll, it’s your Uncle Jake.
